Happy 50th Birthday to Lotion P50. As the Original Biologique Recherche Skincare Spa in the USA, Paul Labrecque discovered the amazing Lotion P50 25 years ago and introduced it to the USA. It's been a "skincare love affair" ever since with our first Biologique Recherche Facial in 1998 in NYC. From Day 1 we knew there was something special with this product and the amazing team behind the brand; Dr Yvan, Josette and Phillip Allouche.
It’s no surprise that Lotion P50 has been a cult favorite for 50 years. It's been called “facial in a bottle”, “holy grail potion”, and “the best beauty product in the world” because it truly transforms skin. It’s become a cult favorite among skincare enthusiasts, celebrities, and beauty editors around the world.
Lotion P50 is formulated with a unique blend of acids, including lactic acid, salicylic acid, and citric acid. These acids help to exfoliate skin, unclog pores, and improve texture and tone. Dr. Phillip Allouche and his R&D team have spent decades perfecting the formula, and it remains Biologique Recherche's most popular product.
Lotion P50 Development and History
In 1970, Yvan Allouche developed the first version of Lotion P50, a progressive exfoliating treatment that helps the skin regain its natural regenerating properties. The formula was the result of extensive research in epidermal reconditioning.
Dr. Allouche was a firm believer in the importance of maintaining the skin's natural pH balance. He created Lotion P50 to help restore this balance and improve the skin's overall health. Over the years, Dr. Phillip Allouche has continued to emphasize the importance of pH in skincare and has developed the Lotion P50 range to continue to effectively support different Skin Instants©.
The success of Lotion P50 was evident from the beginning, as the press quickly picked up on the product's effectiveness. Yvan and Josette knew they had a hit when they started receiving requests for the product from people all over the world.
Where does the name Lotion P50 come from?
The name Lotion P50 comes from a scientific approach that focuses on the product's effectiveness. The "P" in P50 refers to the product's peeling action, which helps to exfoliate the skin. The "50" in P50 refers to the two epidermal cycles that are necessary to achieve optimal efficiency of the product. Each cycle takes around 25 days, so it takes approximately 50 days to see the full benefits of using Lotion P50.
What is the proper way to apply Lotion P50?
The best way to apply Lotion P50 is to press it into the skin in an upward direction starting at the décolleté and working your way up the neck and face. Padding Lotion P50 into skin allows for best absorption into the skin and gently exfoliates while enriching the natural moisturizing factor in the skin. Rubbing Lotion P50 into skin creates abrasive exfoliation and reduces the true benefits of Lotion P50.
Why does P50 smell so strong?
The main goal at Biologique Recherche is for all products to provide outstanding results. We focus on performance not a product’s smell or fragrance.
The ingredient that gives Lotion P50 its characteristic smell is apple cider vinegar. We don’t add synthetic fragrances to Lotion P50 or any of our other products because our goal is to preserve the pureness of the active ingredients and the efficacy of the formulas. Fragrances have a tendency to alter the results of product formulas and can bring many downsides such as irritation, allergies and/or inflammation. This is why our products are created with pure and raw ingredients in very concentrated levels with no alterations to their natural smell.
Due to increased skin sensitivity during pregnancy, we recommend limiting the use of Lotion P50 1970 and Lotion P50V 1970, both of which contain phenol. If you already have sensitive skin we recommend using Lotion P50W which has soothing properties. P50 can also be diluted on a cotton pad dampened with water.
Can P50 be used with retinol retinoid, or any other Vitamin A derivative and can it replace their use?
We do not suggest the use of Lotion P50 in conjunction with a "prescribed" retinol. If a client is using over the counter retinol, there is an exception if there is no sensitivity. If this is the case it would be best to incorporate Lotion P50W or Lotion P50 PIGM 400, since these are our gentler formulations. Lotion P50 does not replace the use of retinols, however it keeps the skin in a constant state of exfoliation, so if applied consistently there should be no need for a retinol/retinoid use.
What are the main benefits of using Lotion P50?
- Daily removal of dead cells and impurities
- Helps regulate sebum secretion and purifies
- Promotes epidermis renewal
- Increases the resistance and quality of the epidermis
- Moisturizes the upper layers of the epidermis thanks to its keratolytic action
- Balances pH on the skin’s surface
